Bartlett was born in

and grew up in
. He
received his B.A. from
in 1928. After his graduation from
Harvard with
, Bartlett worked at the
and the
. Most of his career was spent at Harvard.
Among other achievements, Bartlett was co-author with
of a
classic paper on organic reaction mechanisms.
After his retirement in
1972, he started his second career at

He was elected a Fellow of the

1946
and the United States
in 1947.
He was
